  • tribute to Simon James Ryan

  • simonryan

17/8/2009 I got home early in the morning from work like usual and decided to check my emails at five am Sunday morning as I had not fired up the computer all weekend. Waiting in my Inbox was an email from my friend Peter Flaherty. I read it two or three times as I could not understand it.

It told how our mutual friend and fellow filmmaker Simon Ryan had passed away. I thought some mistake had been made. I had only received a message from Simon last week so how could this be? I was saddened to come to the realization that Simon had been involved in a car accident on Thursday that claimed his life.

Simon had been contributing to my film nights with his many short films and I was certainly impressed when we held the first North Side Shorts event and he premiered CAMERA OBSCURA. His introduction of the film captured me especially as he told the story of how the film was shot and edited over one weekend as he had to meet the deadline to graduate his course. Not only did he complete it but he also received an A plus. I had recently talked to Peter how the film had the same style as SIN CITY. Peter told me that a few people had pointed this out and he replied with great pride that this film had been completed before SIN CITY ever came out. I thought I would share this little anecdote to make people realize what a great filmmaker we have lost. Not only that but every time I met Simon he was always a gentleman and I am saddened by his passing.

    May he rest in peace.

Also there is a bit of controversy surrounding the short BARGAIN which was one of the finalists. I admit I recognised the joke as soon as the film started to screen on the night up in Sydney. To learn more go to www.chortle.co.uk/news/2009/03/01/8391/weve_seen_that_joke_before...

life o'simon fundraiser

24th October 2006, the fundraiser night for "Life O'Simon" was a great sucess!
The audience was blown away by the trailer for the feature "Life O'Simon" which has been produced by Angry Productions, snuffbox films, and Son of Marshall Productions.

Editing of this major australian feature should be finished by March 2007.

Most of the cast and crew attended and were either thoroughly drunk or stoned at the end.
Tempers flared as some of the cast confronted each other on issues and punches were nearly thrown as some argued on who had been the greatest director of all time.

Pictures from the night to be posted soon.
